As the Black hawk came to a low hover several blocks down the road, they fast roped out the sides and onto the asphalt. The wind carried the sickly stench of rot as Jack crouched behind the charred skeleton of a pickup truck, sweat dripping down his face despite the cold. His breath came in short, ragged gasps, and his ribs ached from the bruising he’d taken in the last few weeks. Around him, his team, moved like ghosts, their faces pale, hollow, and streaked with grime. The Circle K stood a hundred feet away, its neon sign no longer flickering with light, a reminder of a world long gone. Inside, survivors were holed up, screaming for help. The infected were gathered around the front of the store, pounding on the large windows.

“On me,” Jack whispered into his radio, his voice raw but confident. He adjusted his grip on his LWRC, the familiar weight of the rifle grounding him. He could see the infected swarming the gas station, clawing at the windows and battering the doors, their growls blending into a horrifying noise.

“Copy that,” Donald responded, his voice shaky but determined. He was nursing a bandaged arm, the result of a close call two days prior. Trauma was etched into his features, his once bright blue eyes now shadowed by sleepless nights and the constant weight of survival. Donald pulled his hearing protection down over his ears from his helmet, knowing that there was about to be rounds fired.
